I’ve surfaced again, after working on the first draft of a new book, and before that, the final draft of another book. (Well, almost final, since I will have two more rounds of re-writes to do on it), and the one in first draft is just beginning, with much editing and many re-writes ahead. I went to a dinner party the other night in Paris, and noticed the man on my left whispering earnestly to the woman on his left. It looked like a serious conversation, and looking slightly embarrassed, the woman shared what they were talking about. The man between us was the head of Air France, and she explained that she had been desperately afraid to fly and he had arranged for her to take a class that dealt with fear of flying, and it was a huge success and she’s been flying comfortably ever since. In the space of a week recently, I had the pleasure of visiting 3 of my daughters. A real triple blessing for me!!! I’m busy, but so are they, and it’s hard for them to get away from their jobs, lives, and commitments, so roughly once every 3 to 6 weeks, I try to visit them in their cities. I wish they would/could come home more often, and more than that I wish we lived in the same city. » read more »

I went to a great dinner party the other night in Paris. It was given by a (book) editor, and what I loved about it was how mixed the guests were. There were writers, editors, journalists, people in politics, some in business, a diplomat, a movie producer, and it was a very interesting group. » read more »

I want to put in a word here for something that I think is enormously important: gratitude. It makes an incredible difference in one’s life — especially when you feel the least grateful! When times are tough, and things are going wrong, if you can bring yourself to be grateful for something, a meal, a friend, a pet, a moment, your favorite pair of shoes, or your feet to put in them, it can turn everything around. I know that sounds Pollyanna-ish, and overly simple, but I have found that to be true at the hardest times. Sometimes you really have to struggle to find something to be grateful for, but if you can do it, you may find yourself looking at your problems differently and change your whole mood.
