My Summer Vacation

Posted on August 13, 2009

I chuckle as I write that, wasn’t that the topic of the first assignment we wrote in first grade???

I’ve had a great summer so far, in Europe with six of my kids. We’ve spent time in Paris, seeing friends, going to dinner in little bistros, doing some shopping (there are GREAT sales in all the Paris stores in July and January). We just hang out together, and enjoy each others’ company (cards, Scrabble, movies on DVD, and casual lunches and dinners out, or cooked at home). I revel in the joy and blessing of being able to spend time with my children, and am so grateful they are still willing to spend time with me!!! » read more »

Contrasts

Posted on June 25, 2009

Although I know I’ve said it to you before in describing my life, I am always struck by the contrasts between my Paris life, and the one I live in San Francisco. Paris is my play life, and San Francisco is my work life. The moment I arrive in Paris, all I want to do is go out, see friends, shop (when I can reasonably do so, depending on my budget!!), play, and have fun. » read more »

If I’m going to keep you up to date on what’s happening in my life, I guess I have to put in the good and the bad, the happy and the sad. This has been a sad week for me. » read more »

My Favorite Paris Restaurants, Bars, and Tea Rooms

Posted on May 13, 2009

Some of you have written to ask me to tell you about where I go in Paris. Before I tell you my favorite restaurants, I have to make a ‘disclosure’ statement to you (true confessions?): I eat very little, and I don’t drink (alcohol) at all. (Great basis for restaurant and bar recommendations, huh??). My parents were of some very distant old school who had strange ideas about disciplining children. If I didn’t clean my plate and eat everything on it, » read more »

7 Days in Paris, Not the Novel, the Real Life

Posted on April 28, 2009

Some of you have asked what my day is like in Paris. And like everyone else, all my days are different. I’ve been back in Paris for 3 days, (the time moves too quickly here, and I never have as much time here as I want, although I am here for half of the year, but the time speeds by too quickly whenever I’m here). » read more »

Fashion Week in Paris

Posted on April 24, 2009

When my kids were small, I used to take all 5 of my daughters to the Haute Couture fashion shows in Paris, which were spectacular shows of beautiful clothes, all hand made and hand sewn, worn by gorgeous models in extraordinary venues. The shows were a major event twice a year, » read more »

In Pursuit of ‘Junk’

Posted on December 23, 2008

I love the pursuit of ‘junk.’ Nothing excites me more than digging through a second hand store, hunting for treasures no one else has noticed. I love auctions, junk stores, vintage shops, high end or low end, and sometimes the low end ones can be more fun, and the victory even greater when you find a wonderful object at a great price. I have always loved mixing ‘important’ (ie. valuable) objects with things that cost nearly nothing. Among my treasures, I have a few beautiful old China porcelains of fruit, which I mixed in with the ceramics my kids made in grade school, and no one suspects which is which. The pieces made by my kids are much more valuable to me! » read more »
