Great Expectations: “That was then. This is now.”

Posted on May 16, 2011

I recently had an interesting experience about motherhood, and really more about expectations, and what happens when we let them go.

One of my favorite holidays is Mother’s Day—because I get celebrated, get presents and don’t have to get a year older. Wow!  Talk about a great deal.  And my kids have always given me fabulous mother’s days, and having nine kids made that a pretty exciting day.  But kids grow up, mine live in three cities, all are busy with lives and careers, some have kids, and it’s not as easy anymore to get together for Mother’s Day. » read more »

A Big Subject: Mutual Respect Between Parents and Adult Kids

Posted on January 10, 2011

I have often said that being the parent of adult kids is an art, and not always so easy to achieve. But I am beginning to think that being the adult children of one’s parents is not so easy either, and also an art.

I recently laughed with a friend about how I used to feel still 10 years old when I visited my father, as an adult, and often did and said things that I couldn’t believe I’d just done. Who said that? Sometimes I couldn’t believe it was me. They treated me like a child, and sometimes in spite of myself, and being all grown up, I acted like a child around my parents. Ugh. The friend I was talking to about it had recently » read more »

Back to School

Posted on September 27, 2010

Although kids seem to go back to school earlier and earlier now (and in all fairness, get out earlier in the spring too), mine have not yet gone back to school, as I write this. My college kids go back to school in mid August, and those on sports teams have to go back even sooner for practice. But some of my kids » read more »

Nick

Posted on September 20, 2010

Sept 20th is the hardest day of the year for me. It is the anniversary of the worst day of my life, but a memory of one of the best people I have known and loved. It is the anniversary of the death of my son Nick, who committed suicide at 19. He was bi polar (manic depressive) all his life, and today he would have been diagnosed by the time he was 4 years old (although I suspected it when he was 2 or even younger), and then psychiatrists didn’t diagnose bi polar that early, so he wasn’t diagnosed until he was 16, three years before he died. » read more »

Vintage Furniture

Posted on July 19, 2010

Vintage has come to mean a lot of things these days. ‘Antique’ used to cover a multitude of eras, and was applied sometimes incorrectly to anything more than l0 or 20 years old. Nowadays, people are a little more precise, and vintage seems to refer to something old, but not old enough to be antique. And it refers to clothes and furniture. And vintage has now become considered a noble status, highly desirable, and covers everything from what is found at a yard sale—-or the highly prized ‘mid century modern’ (remember when that was called Danish Modern?? Although you may not be old enough to remember that). But all the furniture we considered ordinary (and the clothes) in the 60’s and 70’s, » read more »

Graduation

Posted on June 14, 2010

After spending two thirds of my life, and all of my adult life with kids, I have become well aware that there is ‘cool’ and ‘not cool’, cool events, cool people, cool ways of handling situations. There is also rad, ‘cheesy’ (very un-cool), hot (when cool is taken to extremes it becomes ‘hot’, and more recently ‘sick’.) Sick is fantastically cool. It took me a while to get that one, the first time one of my kids’ friends said I looked sick, I was seriously worried and wondered if I’d been working too hard or was ill and didn’t know it—until I got the translation. Whew! Sick! » read more »

6,000 Shoes

Posted on May 10, 2010

Now that would make poor Cinderella look pathetic wouldn’t it? All she had was one pair of glass slippers. Not even a pair of Nike’s!!!

I am writing about something I thought I’d never write about, or didn’t have to. But there is so much talk about it, that I finally decided to say something. » read more »

April….now May….in Paris

Posted on May 3, 2010

Hi everyone…whew….”oufff”, as they say in French. I’m sorry I haven’t written to you sooner, but it has been a whirlwind time for me, some of it good, some not so good. Life. It happens to us all.

I have been working on a book, which kept me busy. Very busy. And I’ve been dealing with real life. Sometimes, you just can’t avoid it!!! And it’s always best when faced squarely and straight on.

After a wonderful month (of March) in Paris, and a lot of fun here with 3 of my daughters, during Fashion Week and the ready to wear shows, I went back to San Francisco, also for a month, of course to see my children, but as some of you may have read in the press, I attended the sentencing hearings in an embezzlement we discovered » read more »

A Night On The Town With My Girls!

Posted on July 8, 2009

Recently, on my way to Paris, I stopped for the night in New York, to visit with my daughters, as I always do. I usually arrive at dinner time, and go to some simple restaurant with them. I wear my travel outfit which looks » read more »

Contrasts

Posted on June 25, 2009

Although I know I’ve said it to you before in describing my life, I am always struck by the contrasts between my Paris life, and the one I live in San Francisco. Paris is my play life, and San Francisco is my work life. The moment I arrive in Paris, all I want to do is go out, see friends, shop (when I can reasonably do so, depending on my budget!!), play, and have fun. » read more »
