Alexander McQueen

Posted on March 1, 2010

I always hate to bring up sad topics, but occasionally it seems appropriate to address a serious subject with you.

For those of you who follow fashion, last week the shock waves rippled through the fashion world with the sudden and untimely death of Alexander McQueen. He is without question » read more »

Show Time in Paris

Posted on February 1, 2010

Well, it’s that time of year again—-it happens twice a year: the Haute Couture fashion shows in Paris. But what was once a sky full of fireworks, for an entire week twice a year, is now just a whimper compared to the Big Bang it used to be, for a variety of reasons. » read more »

Haiti

Posted on January 19, 2010

Dear Friends,

For once, I am left nearly speechless, with sadness, and with a feeling of overwhelming helplessness over the images we’re all seeing of Haiti, and the stories we’re all hearing. It doesn’t lead one to wax poetic, to be philosophical, or even to know what to say. Such terrible suffering, such incredible devastation, people still trapped, hopefully some left alive, so many dead, the faces of the children, and of the people we see trapped as time for effective relief efforts to save them is running out. Tears run down my face, and surely yours as well, when I see them rescued. My heart goes out to those still waiting for news, or who have already had bad news of their loved ones. And then in sharp contrast, the jubilation of those who have found a loved one alive. » read more »

New Year’s Eve

Posted on December 29, 2009

Now if any night of the year is a mixed bag and a mixed blessing—-New Year’s Eve is definitely it!!!! For years, I’ve gone back and forth about what to do about it. Most of the time, no matter what you do on New Year’s Eve, you feel that you may have done the wrong thing—unless you had a really great one!!!! When I was married, » read more »

Paris at Christmas Time

Posted on December 21, 2009

After Thanksgiving, I often try to squeeze in one more trip to Paris, before my kids come home to California for Christmas. And Paris is a gorgeous place to be before or during the holidays. In recent years, in California anyway, there seem to be fewer Holiday decorations as people become more and more politically correct. » read more »

California Hall of Fame

Posted on December 15, 2009

Wow!!!!!!! On Tuesday, December lst, I received a gold medal from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in Sacramento, and was put in the California Hall of Fame. I have to tell you, I never take awards or any kind of honor lightly, and I have never gotten blase about something like that. This was a great honor, a lovely ceremony, and a very touching award. » read more »

Paris in the Fall

Posted on October 23, 2009

Sometimes I write to you about some very tough subjects, and in some ways, this hasn’t been an easy year. I wrote to you about losing my stepmother Kuniko (and so many of you wrote me such wonderful letters, thank you soooo much!!), and the loss of my son’s best friend. Tough subjects, hard losses. But the wonderful thing about life is that it is so varied. Hard things happen, and then life eases up and you have some great times. After a tough spring, » read more »

Art Show: Word

Posted on October 1, 2009

I wanted to share with you what a good time I recently had! As you know, I had a contemporary art gallery for four years in San Francisco. My mission was to show the work of emerging artists, artists who were essentially unknown. In an ‘art sense’, they were ‘young’ artists, but in real life not all of them were. Some were very young, some were considerably older, and all had been working on their art for many, many years, with deep commitment. They did beautiful work and my years of owning the art gallery » read more »

Book Cover Photos

Posted on September 14, 2009

Once my children leave after our summer vacation together (and my birthday in mid-August), I start getting organized for the fall. I begin writing again in September, in true back-to-school spirit, and I spend the last half of August, clearing things off my desk, working on the outline of the book I’ll be starting, and doing projects related to my work. And every other year, I pose for the photographs that appear on the back of my books. » read more »

Annabelle

Posted on August 6, 2009

Hi Everyone,

I’ve been having a very busy summer, and in the past few weeks a good one, after a very bumpy late spring. I shared with you that we lost my beloved stepmother, my late son’s best friend, and even my daughter’s much loved little dog. We had one more big loss and heartbreak, before the summer got off to a decent start. And since I share family events with you, and have talked about our dogs, I wanted to bring you up to date on this too. » read more »
