In the Wake of Sandy

Posted on November 12, 2012

As happens with major disasters which we read about, the media turn the page. They move on to other stories, other catastrophes or points of interest. We cry over injured children in photos of war zones, or after an explosion, see women mourning their dead, or injured soldiers. We read about earthquakes, tsunamis, hurricanes, which take over our lives briefly, and then something else comes along, and the media forces us to focus on something else. But the people in the affected areas, and victims of those catastrophes are living with the fallout of the disaster for years. I feel that way about Hurricane Sandy now. As I mentioned before, it hit close to home for us, when one of my daughters lost her home and everything she owns, so I have a front row seat on the tragedies Sandy left in her wake, not just for us, but for so many. Lives lost, homes destroyed, whole neighborhoods impacted, and that won’t recover for a long, long time. For us, the disaster is still our main and only focus, and how to comfort my daughter from her tragic loss. But thank God she is alive!!! Others weren’t as lucky. » read more »

Sandy

Posted on November 1, 2012

Hello Everyone,

I write to you in sorrow over the shocking catastrophe that has struck the Eastern states of the US, in the face of what is now called the greatest natural disaster in US History. It has taken me some days to catch my breath and even know what to say. We are all so horrified, and grief stricken for the people who lost homes, belongings, all their worldly possessions, or worse, loved ones. Natural disasters are more terrifying than anything man can create. Fires, floods, hurricanes, earthquakes, tornadoes, anyone who has experienced them has a profound respect for the force of nature. » read more »

Play Ball!!!

Posted on October 23, 2012

Hi Everyone!! WOW!!!

As I wrote in a recent blog, I was lucky enough to go to the first game of the baseball playoffs with my youngest son, and I had a terrific time!! Immediately after, I came back to Paris and kept track of how they were doing in each subsequent game, thrilled as the tension mounted, and they won the games they needed to, to head for the World Series. For the first games of the playoffs, I was satisfied to get the results from a friend the next day. » read more »

Busy San Francisco Weekend

Posted on October 22, 2012

Wow!!! What a crazy weekend. It seems like everything went on in San Francisco a couple weekends ago. I’m not sure if the city planned it on purpose or if it just happened that way.

In one single weekend, the America’s Cup races (pre trials, I think, or maybe just for demonstration before the real deal next August) took place on the bay. So sailing fans were riveted to the excitement on the bay, as some of the America’s Cup boats raced each other during the weekend. » read more »

So Much Fun!!!

Posted on October 15, 2012

I had so much fun the other night, I had to share it with you.  My youngest son is an avid sports fan (especially baseball and football), and very kindly invited me to a Playoffs game between the SF Giants and the Cincinnati Reds. And I was thrilled to go. I haven’t been to a baseball game since his next oldest brother used to take me to games in his teens. So it was a big deal to me to be invited to the first Playoff game by my son (we’ve never been to a baseball game together before), and I was very touched to be asked.  I got a stern admonition before the game to wear black and orange, definitely NOT red (good thing he warned me!!), and I figured I’d look a little Halloween, but what the hell. With an invitation like that, I was going to do what I was told, and I did. I dug out two orange sweaters because I figured it would be cold, a bright orange wool scarf, black pants and a warm black coat (SF can get windy, foggy, and bitter cold at night, even in the summer, and it wasn’t freezing but it did get chilly).    » read more »

Chanel Haute Couture

Posted on July 23, 2012

Hi Everyone,

To keep you abreast of Haute Couture fashion events in Paris, no report on the subject would be complete without telling you about Chanel, which is the leader of the pack in fashion. Designed by the remarkable and legendary Karl Lagerfeld, he is tireless in his energy, innovations, and extraordinary designing skill. (He designs at least four or five ready to wear collections a year for Chanel, two Haute Couture collections, and also designs for Fendi, and his own label, and a sideline and huge talent in photography too.) It makes the head spin to think of all he does, and to see him in all his strength and glory at 80. He is TRULY an icon, and deservedly so. » read more »

Christian Dior Haute Couture Fashion Show: Report from Paris

Posted on July 16, 2012

Hi everyone,

For a number of years now I only go to one Haute Couture show per season (they show the Haute Couture clothes twice a year, in January for the following summer, and in July for the following winter). After years and years of going to many shows, now that most of the big couture houses have closed, I only go to Chanel. Dior used to be one of my favorites, but although I immensely admire John Galliano’s talent, I’ve never been a big fan of his clothes, and as he’s been the designer for Dior for many years, I stopped going to their shows. Due to a series of unfortunate events, a year or two ago, Mr. Galliano » read more »

Bittersweet

Posted on February 21, 2012

Most of the time, I lead a very quiet ‘normal’ life, and do everything I can to avoid the public side of my life. As you’ve read here before, my family life is the most important to me, I’ve always been a ‘regular mom’, and I’m very shy and don’t like publicity. And also most of the time, I try to pretend to myself that I’m not famous. But now and then that facet of my life can’t be avoided. And it still comes as a surprise to me that I’m famous. While spending my time driving carpool, picking up kids from school and going to soccer games, or writing all night, somehow fame snuck up on me. And recently, I went to one of those major glamorous Hollywood events that still knocks my socks off, and totally stuns me, and always reminds me that I’m a public person too.  The party I went to was Clive Davis’ annual pre-Grammy party, the night before the Grammy’s. It’s held in LA, and Clive Davis is the most important man in the music world today, and has been for many, many years. He’s the most important music producer in the business, and has represented everyone from Janis Joplin to Alicia Keys, Sean Combs/Puff Daddy, Santana, Stevie Wonder, Diana Ross, and just about every important singer you’ve ever heard of. Beyond that he is a truly wonderful man, hugely admired by everyone in the music business, and adored by the artists he represents. And the party he puts on every year is a knock out, and a party people do just about anything to get invited to. I have been very lucky to know Clive as a friend for thirty years, and have been lucky enough to attend his party before, and have always been vastly impressed by the artists who performed there. » read more »

Ten Years Later

Posted on September 12, 2011

I think yesterday was a serious day for everyone, remembering the events of September 11th, ten years ago. I think it was the first attack we have ever had on mainland America, and I think it gave all of us a sense of frightening vulnerability, realizing how hard and how easily we could be hit. » read more »
