Happy Birthday

Posted on August 1, 2011

Hi Everybody,

I’m very excited because I had a new book come out in hardcover about a week ago, called “Happy Birthday!”. It’s a fun book that I really enjoyed writing, and I am hoping you’ll enjoy it too. I just got word this week that next week it will come out as #3 on the New York Times Bestseller List, which is incredibly exciting and gratifying for me. People probably think I’m blasé about being on bestseller lists, because I’ve been on them for a long time, but for me it’s exciting every time. I write the books, I spend several years editing them, and finally they come out, and I always hold my breath, hoping that my readers » read more »

Why Not?

Posted on June 13, 2011

In July, I have a new book coming out in hardcover called “Happy Birthday”. It started out with a funny theme, about three people tuning ‘landmark ages’ on the same day. A very glamorous, beautiful woman who has a boomingly successful career and TV show, as the arbiter of taste and style in the home—she’s gorgeous and successful, but turning 60, even if she doesn’t look it. On the same day, her daughter, who owns a restaurant and works like a slave and has no love life or partner—is turning 30. » read more »

Legacy

Posted on October 11, 2010

Hi Everybody,

You probably know I have a new book out in hardcover, called “Legacy”.  It’s both historical and modern, and I really love that book.  There are two main characters in the book, a modern woman, and a woman set in history.  The main character is a Dakota Sioux woman, actually a young girl, who traveled from the Sioux village where she lived (and was kidnapped by a warring tribe, when she was in her later teens.  She is the chief’s daughter), she travels to New Orleans, and from there to France. » read more »

Family Ties

I don’t usually talk about my books here, and use it more as a forum for sharing with you what I think or how I feel, or to tell you what I’m doing, or something exciting I’ve seen. But I do write the books after all, and I guess that’s worth talking about too. » read more »

Wow!!!!!!! On Tuesday, December lst, I received a gold medal from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, in Sacramento, and was put in the California Hall of Fame. I have to tell you, I never take awards or any kind of honor lightly, and I have never gotten blase about something like that. This was a great honor, a lovely ceremony, and a very touching award. » read more »

Book Cover Photos

Posted on September 14, 2009

Once my children leave after our summer vacation together (and my birthday in mid-August), I start getting organized for the fall. I begin writing again in September, in true back-to-school spirit, and I spend the last half of August, clearing things off my desk, working on the outline of the book I’ll be starting, and doing projects related to my work. And every other year, I pose for the photographs that appear on the back of my books. » read more »

Sequels

Posted on January 6, 2009

A number of people have written to me over the years, and now lately with this blog, asking if I’ve ever considered writing a sequel to any of my novels.  They ask it about a book they particularly like, and I’m always pleased to hear they liked it. » read more »

It’s Always the First Time for Me

Posted on January 2, 2009

Whenever I want to write a book, I am obliged (by contract) to submit an outline to my publisher first.  My editor reads it, decides if she likes the idea, the premise, and the story I describe in a 40 or 50 page outline, that is supposed to include the characters, plot, and details of the book, broken down by chapter.  The fact that I have to do that always surprises people.  They assume that after all the books I’ve written (107 to date), I can just write whatever I want, send it off, and my publishers are thrilled.  That’s not how it works in real life, or not mine anyway.  (I used to have to submit several sample chapters or even half the book.  Now I just have to submit the outline).  The editor then calls me or writes to me, and makes lots of comments about what they don’t like, want changed, or what doesn’t work.  And if I don’t agree with those changes, I have to defend my point of view.  But on the whole, they call the shots.  They’re buying the book, they write the check, and sometimes they have some good ideas (or sometimes I strongly defend my point of view if it differs from theirs). » read more »
